Baby Essentials by Madeline

Hello Healthy Heddleston readers! My name is Madeline and I hang out in my little section of the blogosphere at Food, Fitness, and Family. I was thrilled when Katie asked me to write a guest post for her blog while she is cuddling her sweet baby bundle :) I am super jealous of all those newborn snuggles she is getting … My baby girl is 5 months old and out of that stage already!

Even though you plan and research baby gear when you’re pregnant, it’s amazing how much you learn once the baby is actually here! I thought I would share with you some baby items that we LOVE and are glad we have had for the last 5 months. I tried to pick some of the more unique items that you might not find on pre-made registries 😉

1. A high-quality camera.

I thought I was camera-happy before I had a baby … now my shutter-finger is out of control. Having a good camera has been my favorite thing. Babies grow so dang fast so having hundreds thousands of pictures as memories is the most precious thing.

2. HALO Sleep Sack Swaddles

I had no idea that Emmalyne would be a baby Houdini and break out of her swaddle on a regularly basis. The HALO sleep sack swaddles have Velcro so the swaddle staid put leading to better sleep for all.

3. Monthly Onesie Stickers

This goes with having a good camera. I ordered month onesie stickers from Etsy before Emmie was born knowing I wanted to capture her growth each month. These stickers are so cute! I just put her in a white onesie, slap on the sticker, and photograph away! It’s so cool looking at the pictures now and seeing how much she has grown.

4. A Paci Plushie

We gave Emmie a pacifier right away on the advice of our pediatrician. It was one of the best things we did. I know there are pro-paci and anti-paci people but this is what worked for us. The Paci Plushie was a gift from a friend and it helps Emmie keep her paci in her mouth and gives her something to hold on to. Plus it is super cute :)

5. Sleep Sheep

We got Em a Sleep Sheep for Christmas and I am kicking myself for not getting it sooner. She has never slept better! We put it on the ocean setting for every nap and every night at bedtime. I like that it is on a timer so it is not on all night. Again, it has the added bonus of being extra cute!

Thank you so much Madeline! It’ll be interesting to see what baby gear our little man loves and hates! We actually have that exact camera you pictured as well as some sleep sacks! After you wrote this post for me I asked John if we needed to go get a white noise machine — guess we’ll see how he does without one! (Updated to add: we’ve since bought a noise machine but we’re still figuring out what Xander likes!)

What was a baby gear essential for you??

  1. 1

Great post! Looking forward to the things that I’ll need once my little girl arrives!

    Dear Madeline,

As a mother of 3 with a 4th on the way and a yearly income under $50k my opinion is that these are not essential to child rearing. While they are wonderful luxeries and your product reviews are helpful, I’m profoundly grateful they were not essential to raising my babies or we would have been out of other things, such as electricity and food.

      Hi Aimee!

Thanks for your comment! I have to apologize to Madeline, I might have been the one to come up with the word “essentials.” A more proper title for the post could have been “fun baby items,” “unique baby must-haves,” or something more along those lines. Of course none of the items listed are essential — all babies need are a place to sleep, unconditional love, and food! (Diapers and clothes of course help too!)

I love that Paci Plushies were included on the list! I grew up with the mom that invented these!
