Telling Our Parents

Telling your parents you’re pregnant is so exciting! Since we were telling them around my birthday, they didn’t think anything of us coming into town to “celebrate my birthday.” The real reason of course was to tell them about baby!

We thought of creative ways to tell all three sets of parents:

Dad was up first. Earlier in the summer we purchased a Groupon to go white water rafting. However, baby is a little too young to be going white water rafting for the first time. I wrapped up the Groupon tickets with a note saying something like, “Please enjoy these WWR tickets as your birthday present. We know you’ll have a blast, plus it’s highly frowned upon to WWR while pregnant.” (My dad’s birthday is the day after mine.)

My dad read the note a little confused… then realized what we were telling him!

The next day we went to my mom’s house. I don’t think she understood why she was getting a present, but this was super fun for us. Mom’s special card said, “This time turn on Tuesday’s. Love, Baby H.” We had included the Grandma countdown that my sister-in-law had given her when she was pregnant with Amelia in the bag.

My Mom read the note a little confused. She looked up and asked, “Who is Baby H?” I dunno what we said in response but then she started to cry happy tears :)

We had to wait an entire week until we told John’s parents — it was SO hard to hold the secret after telling my parents. We visited his parents for Labor Day, bringing a gift in tow.

John had decided that we would tell them we were giving them their 35th wedding anniversary gift early. Inside their box were little onesies that we had decorated, saying things like, “I love Nana” and “Grandpa loves me.” Once they opened the gift they understood what we were telling them right away!

Our baby will be John’s parents first grandkid, and my parents 2nd. Everyone was so so excited and we gave them pictures of our ultrasounds too. We’ll be sure to add to their ultrasound collection when we get our next two!

How did you tell your parents you were pregnant? Or how do you think you will tell them in the future?
