Black Bean Brownies

BBB’s — Black Bean Brownies!

I’ve been trying to use up my pantry items since we may be moving in the next two months. I probably bought black beans to make burgers, but decided they’d be tastier in brownie form.

Ingredients

  • 1 15 ounce can of black beans
  • 3 eggs
  • 3 T applesauce
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup cocoa
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • pinch of salt
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips

Directions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Rinse and drain can of black beans.
  • Puree black beans in a food processor until smooth.
  • Add all other ingredients in food process except chocolate chips.
  • Fold in chocolate chips by hand.
  • Pour batter into a pie plate or an 8 x 8 pan.
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.

Result will be a chewy, delicious brownie that no one will ever realize beans are in.

Katie: I made brownies tonight hon.

John: Oh yeah? My brownies or your brownies?

Katie: Our brownies. There’s no flour in them at all.

John: Oh. Okay. These are really good.

Have you ever made brownies with beans? What did you think?

These look sooo good! I’ve made black bean brownies before, but this recipe is different / looks way better.

I haven’t made black bean brownies before, but these look really good! I’ll have to bookmark this recipe… :)

Looks delicious! I’ve never tried black bean brownies, but I have tried garbanzo bean chocolate cake, which was great.

Whenever I have done beans in baked goods they taste good fresh out of the oven, but then the consistency gets way off by the next time I eat them. Wonder why.

I’m really glad you tried these out as I’ve wanted to do it as well – and wondered if the hubby would have the same reaction that John had!

p.s. NOT happy about that moving reference at the beginning of the post, but you already know that! :p

this is the second time i’ve seen these. might have to try them out!

Is this a trick? How do you put beans into a dessert and it tastes like a brownie? Is there something I am missing. The picture looks like a brownie and Mr. Heddleston says they are really good and you claim they are brownies but I am skeptical. Does putting beans in it make them higher in protein? fiber? tootability?

I’ve heard of it, but I’ve never actually tried beans in a sweet… I got the recipes in my computer now though!

Dear goodness, those look absolutely delicious. I tried them before and it was better than I ever expected. I’ll have to add that to my recipe list!

No but I love beans and chocolate so I may have to try it!

I love the “our” brownies. I need to use that line when Hunni asks next time.

  12. 14

I have NEVER heard of this.

I am somewhat in disbelief of this recipe and somewhat wanting to try it. And somewhat terrified to try it!

Don’t be scared!! They are delicious!! My friend and reader Sarah just made them last night and said that she and her husband loved them!! (she tweeted me this morning about it!)

My next recipe is going to use garbanzo beans/chickpeas!!

      Happy baking!

We just made these today and they turned out amazing! They were the first black bean brownies we tried and they turned out lovely. We ended up using a banana instead of applesauce though (didn’t have any applesauce) and it was a success!
Thanks for this great recipe. It was a joy to make :)

We Love to Hear From You
