I was a freshman. He was a sophomore. We both had the same work-study job in college and quickly became friends. He also became my upper-classman friend who had a car, which meant I would bug him for rides to the greyhound station to go visit PA and my then boyfriend. He never seemed to mind and had a girlfriend of his own at the time.
Throughout all of college we remained friends. Some semesters we hung out and talked more than others, but that happens with friends. In May of 2006 we realized we were living in the same building for the whole next year. This prompted dinner dates… aka taking turns making each other dinner throughout that summer and the following school year.
When I had met John my freshman year, I immediately thought he was a great guy. Certainly cute and super smart. He became my little secret upper-classman crush. When we were both living in The Village, I started to realize that I still had a school girl crush on this guy I had met two years ago!
Fast forward to March 3, 2008: I received an instant message from Johnny. He was inviting me and a friend down to visit him in North Carolina where he had started graduate school at Duke. We also talked about how we were both newly single — thank you facebook. We talked all night it seemed, and I eventually booked a ticket for a long-weekend visit in April. (The friend didn’t come. We weren’t talking at the time.)
After that first day of chatting out of the blue, we were obsessed with talking to each other over the computer. We eventually upgraded to being obsessed with talking on the phone. And I’m talking about the up-all-night-till-four-in-the-morning-I-don’t-care-if-I’m-tired obsessed. We had so much in common that we never new about each other while we were friends.
I learned he had that same crush feeling and throughout our month of awaiting my first trip to North Carolina, we fell in love. We both knew it. We both felt it. However, we refused to say it out loud until we were in person in April.
Our first time together as a couple: April 2-6, 2008…

To be continued…
