Did you know that gluten containing additives are often added to products such as barbeque sauce? When I heard that Melanie’s Big Acres Gourmet Products were gluten free I had to contact her for some samples. I was pleasantly surprised that they were so generous! A box arrived with Rich & Mild BBQ Sauce, Chipotle Maple BBQ Sauce, Mango Peach Chili Sauce, Perfect Poultry Spice Rub, + Stellar Steak Spice Rub. Thank you so much!
The first product we tried was the Mango Peach Chili Sauce. I thought this would be great over fish, so I thawed some frozen tilapia + went to town!
Paired with a side salad + gluten free risotta, the dinner was a winner. I was nervous about the Mango Peach Chili Sauce at first since I’m not the biggest fan of mango. However, the flavor combination was a party in my mouth. Upon first bite, the sauce tastes sweet. Then, as you finish your bite the sauce leaves a bit of a zing in your mouth! Loved how this sauce was playing tricks on me + I’m excited to try the sauce on other protein sources!
Next, I had almost 2 pounds of chicken to use. I decided to give the Perfect Poultry Rub, the Rich & Mild BBQ Sauce, and the Chipotle Maple BBQ Sauce a try all at once.
A light dusting of the poultry rub was placed on my tradition recipe for gluten free chicken tenders. I also tried both bbq sauces over the chicken tenders to see what the flavor combination would be.
We also tried the rub + sauces on plain chicken so we could get a good opinion on the flavors. Pictured below was our yummy sample plate!

Gosh, where do I even start. Let me take this one by one.
Rich & Mild BBQ Sauce: I thought this was going to be my favorite since I’m a mild kind of gal. However, while it was good, there just wasn’t that wow factor. I enjoyed the sauce better over the chicken tenders — the flavor combination just worked better than on it’s own.
Perfect Poultry Spice Rub: If you like Rosemary this is the rub for you. However, Mr. Healthy and I both think Rosemary is a bit overpowering and didn’t enjoy this rub as much as we would have liked.
Chipotle Maple BBQ Sauce: Ladies and gentlemen we have a winner! Mr. Healthy and I both LOVEDDDD this sauce. I was nervous about this sauce because I thought with the word chipotle, it might be hot. However, the sweetness of the maple really complimented the chipotle. As we were waiting for our quinoa to finish cooking, we were literally fighting over the Chipotle Maple BBQ Sauce samples. This sauce tasted wonderful over the chicken fingers as well – but was superb all on its own.
What about the Stellar Steak Rub you ask? We tried that shortly after receiving the package on some beef burger patties. Quite good with a nice garlic flavor, which works out for Mr. Healthy since his favorite spice is garlic.
If I had to rate these products from most favorite to least favorite my ratings would be as follows: Chipotle Maple BBQ Sauce, Stellar Steak Spice Rub, Mango Peach Chili Sauce, Rich & Mild BBQ Sauce, and Perfect Poultry Spice Rub bringing up the rear.
Once again, a big thank you to Melanie at Big Acres Gourmet Sauces. I am so happy that you are providing yummy gluten free sauces that are much needed!
