Steak and Potatoes

It’s getting warmer and that means more time spent outside withe grill! We’ve gotten great use out of our fabulous grill since we received it as a wedding present, but the grill is getting even more of a workout now that the weather is staying nice. Some of you may know that I used to be a vegetarian… that being said I still don’t gravitate toward meat — let alone red meat. However, maybe once every 1-2 months John and I grill a mean steak. Below is our grill where the magic happens.

Part of why the steak turns out so yummy is because of the amazing rub we use on it. It’s an English Prime Rib Rub perfect for any beef grilling from Penzey’s Spices. We actually received as a wedding present as part of a our “Spicy Wedding” spice gift set from my friends Beth and Leslie. Below is the picture of my dinner… steak, potatoes, a grilled portobello mushroom, and a side of fruit salad. I realize the dinner looks pretty non-colorful (aside from the fruit) but it was definitely soo yummy and I got a big veggie portion in with that portobello mushroom – so at least that was good.

Below is the colorful and delicious fruit salad. Included are: clementines, pears, apples, and strawberries. I love throwing together a yummy fruit salad with all the fruit I have in my kitchen at the time! We also had blueberries in the house but both John and I don’t love love (only like) blueberries as much fresh… we like to make homemade blueberry muffins and fruit smoothies — there is where the blueberries are yum yummy!

Below I actually decided to save my fruit salad for on top of homemade vanilla frozen yogurt from Mitchell’s. I added a little chocolate syrup drizzle too. I was trying to be very good! Oh, as a side note, the clementines tastes a little weird in the frozen yogurt but the other fruits worked perfectly.

So this is what took place last night! It was a fun dinner to prepare and eat!

What are your favorite foods to grill?

Well first I’m jealous that you got your grill as a wedding present… we didn’t. :( Anyway.. my favorite food to grill is tuna steaks. My dad makes them with garlic and lemon. They are so tasty and so good for you too! I also like grilled salmon and teriyaki chicken. I am also a fan of steaks as well… but I know the other items are more healthy. I am also becoming a fan of portabello mushroom burgers and veggie burgers. Which reminds me…. we should do an engaged encounter couples cook out before you go if we can.

The foods you mentioned for grilling sound delicious! Yes, those are more healthy too! Of course, John and I just have steak as a special treat. I’d love to have an engaged encounter cookout before I leave! Let me talk to John about it.. it would have to be on a week night, but hopefully we can make it happen :)

Oh, I almost forgot.. I loveee the flavored chicken sausages from Trader Joes. There is also a great turkey sausage vendor at the West Side Market.. but we don’t get down there much anymore.
